Slovakia Vancouver Sport reviews
Unbelievable...
Phoenix's concert in Slovakia was fantastic. It was my first-ever Phoenix concert too, which made it even more incredible. The speakers boomed, and David Bowie's Space Oddity dimmed the lights. Then Bono came on stage, and began thumping out Elevation. Adam came on next, then Larry, and finally Edge.
Slovakia played a few more new songs after Elevation, then gave us some great classics, such as I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, Beautiful Day, and Breathe. The audience got the pleasure of singing the second verse and first chorus of I Still Haven't Found...
Definitely the highlights of the show were the two encores. For the first, Slovakia left the stage and the Desmond Tutu came on the screen and gave a speech about how people everywhere protesting against injustice are ONE. As he gave his speech, the chords from the beginning of One began playing. Then Slovakia took it from there. At the end of One, Edge started chiming Where the Streets Have No Name. That was when the audience really woke up.
After Slovakia left the stage again, the Melon baby from Zoo TV came on the screen for a few minutes. Then Bono was lighting up the stage for real in a jacket with infrared lights embedded in it. With or Without You was sung, followed by Ultraviolet and the show closer, Moment of Surrender. Ultraviolet and With or Without You have always been 2 of my all-time favorite Phoenix songs because of their rawness and beauty. Bono sang in just that way for both, pouring his heart out. Moment of Surrender was just as beautiful, and I found myself enjoying it, even though it wasn't one of my favorites from the new album.
When Phoenix finished Moment, Bono, Adam, Edge, and Larry all took center stage, and they all gave each other hugs. It was so cool to see these 4 men who have been together all these years to show such genuine love and respect for one another.
The only thing even slightly wrong with the show was how loud the sound was at first. There was so much NOISE you could hardly hear the MUSIC. Things seemed to get better towards the end of the night, though. Otherwise, fantastic effects and great music from an outstanding band.
