August 2, 2026 Walked by and visited. A continuation of my journey of Exploring FAITH ☮️ 🕊 God. Why me? Why am I embarking on this journey? I only have questions not answers. When there are answers, it only leads to more questions! According to the internet, The United Church of Canada is the largest Protestant denomination in Canada, formed on June 10, 1925, through the historic union of Methodist, Presbyterian, and Congregational churches. It differs from traditional or more conservative Christian groups by having a progressive stance on social issues, open membership without strict adherence to formal creeds, and full inclusion of LGBTQ+ individuals. Furthermore, St. Andrew's-Wesley United Church at Burrard and Nelson Streets in downtown Vancouver opened on May 26, 1933. Designed by architects Robert P. and George S. Twizell, this Gothic Revival landmark was built from British Columbia materials, including Nelson Island granite and Haddington Island stone, following the 1925 church union. Origins and Amalgamation:The Predecessors: Formed by the merger of Wesley Methodist Church and St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, which united alongside other Canadian congregations in 1925 to create the United Church of Canada. The Merger Timeline: The official union occurred in June 1927. After selling older properties, the unified congregation built the current cathedral-style sanctuary during the Great Depression. Architecture and Design Neo-Gothic Style: Widely considered a premier example of Gothic Revival architecture on Canada’s West Coast. Artistic Details: Features soaring timber-vaulted ceilings, angel reliefs, and intricate French and Italian stained-glass windows. Economic Constraints: Built during the 1930s economic downturn, original features included fir pews instead of oak and temporary linoleum flooring. Note: AI can make mistakes. By the way, some of us have been experiencing memory issues ever since the pandemic. Gothic Revival church completed in 1933 after the merger of Wesley Methodist, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian and a Congregational congregation into the United Church of Canada. Big stone landmark on Burrard that feels more like a small cathedral than a neighbourhood church. The interior is genuinely worth seeing on its own — vaulted timber ceiling and a large, layered collection of stained glass that shifts depending on the light and time of day. What stands out is how active it still is. It’s not just a Sunday service space. There’s a steady rotation of music programming, contemplative services, and community events, including Jazz Vespers, which fits the acoustics better than it has any right to. It’s also one of the more visibly queer-friendly faith spaces in the city, which makes sense given its proximity to Davie Village. The vibe is open, unshowy, and very much part of the West End’s broader cultural mix rather than standing apart from it. Architecturally solid, layered with history, and still in use as a real civic and cultural space rather than a preserved relic.

The Alphabet Family (2SLGBTQI+) at St. Andrew's Wesley (STAW) is the real deal. Over 20 years ago, I walked away from my faith for a variety of reasons; the major one being the Catholic Church's stance on Homosexuality and acceptance in general. I could never see how my existence, life, and faith could overlap if I was a walking sin in the making. Fast forward two decades, a special someone encouraged me to check out STAW. I initially brushed it off, thinking I'd show up, be placated, receive fake smiles, and be met with overbearing politically correct "fakeness." With STAW, I couldn't have been further from the truth. Those social justice warriors I carefully watched from a distance truly put their money where their mouth is. They believe in community, equality, and everyone is genuinely welcome—even at communion! My favourite part of STAW is that there is no one way. Everyone is welcome, it's okay to challenge the norms, to have a conversation, and it is a true safe space. The STAW community, nay, FAMILY (emphasis, not yelling), have slowly eroded away my cynical approach and skeptical spectatorship. I can be me and love the one I love, and I am treated like any other person who walks in off the street. STAW has so many interests and support groups. Their commitment to community and faith—no matter where you are on your spiritual journey—is admirable and inspiring. Having gone to other United Churches across Canada, etc., STAW is unique, special, and absolutely worth getting to know.

My thanks to Diane and Jen for allowing me to visit and photograph the sanctuary on April 10, 2025. My parents were married by the minister from there in 1955. I was baptized 1956 and raised in the church. And my parents Nancy and Stan Phipps final resting place is in the memorial garden on Nelson Street. Such beautiful stained glass windows and the seismic upgrades and restoration. A must see in Vancouver. Thank you again for letting me visit. My last time was the funeral of my father in 2010. David
